The Annual Centreville Virginia Day
Don’t be surprised to be welcomed by face painted children
if you will be driving into downtown Centreville on Centreville day. The
Centreville day is designed to bring families together to enjoy different
varieties of activities and to celebrate the town they have called home.
The fun activities in this free family event include
children activities, a parade, live music, a pet pageant, martial arts,
swordsmen, dancing, food and crafts. Admission to this event is always free and
there is free parking space for attending families and friends of the community
that come with their vehicle. For those who do not want to stress their selves
driving, there is always a free shuttle provided by the organizers at strategic
locations to convey people to the venue of the event.
This event was first started by a Centreville resident named
Teri Hunt. Teri Hunt considered Centreville a great place which needed an
identity. So she created an event known as Centreville Day which was first held
on the 2000th anniversary of the establishment of the town charter.
Centreville Day is planned and organized by the Friends of
Historic Centreville in conjunction with the Fairfax County Park Authority. It
is a day the community members appreciate what has occurred in their local,
state and national history. The members of the community are always seen on
that day exchanging smile and handshakes.
There is always a parade at every Centreville day. This
parade is most times led by the Chantilly Academy’s Air Force and participants
include the fire and Police vehicles, Boy Scouts, Girl Scouts, the County’s
sheriff’s office and many others.
Foods such as pulled pork and barbecue, shawarmas, baklava,
Thai dishes, seafood etc. will be available for attendees as crafters,
businesses and nonprofits organizations will have several booths.
Attendees are always given the opportunity to enjoy hands-on
history at Mount Gilead which was built as a tavern in 1785. There is also a
guided tour at Mount Gilead and Braddock road. Visitors to this event may
disembark at the Braddock road stop and walk downhill to explore the Old Stone
Church – The Church of Ascension – touring the historic church and viewing several antique
scientific instruments.
And finally, there is always a stage entertainment
with different rendition of songs from different groups including those
renditions from teachers, Youth Choir of the Fairfax Choral Society, Hallelujah
Tae Kwon Do demonstration team, Korean Harmonica and autoharp players, and the
Northern Virginia Wu Shu Academy.
